Fires rage in three separate locations in Balıkesir; crews battle flames

Balıkesir, Turkey, is grappling with multiple blazes as firefighters and emergency crews work to contain three separate fires that erupted across the province on Sunday. Fueled by strong winds, the fires have necessitated a coordinated response involving numerous agencies.

Crews from the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority), Gendarmerie Command, Police Department, and the Regional Directorate of Forestry, along with district municipalities, are engaged in a unified effort. They are responding to a forest fire in Kepsut and land fires in the Altıeylül and Karesi districts.

In Kepsut, the forest fire spread across the Sarıfakılar, Gedikler, and Karaağaç neighborhoods. Resources deployed include fire engines and aircraft from the Forestry Directorate, water cannons from the police, multiple fire trucks and water tankers from the Metropolitan Municipality, and heavy machinery from various municipal bodies. The fire in this area has been brought under control, and the Metropolitan Municipality dispatched two buses to evacuate residents if necessary.

Meanwhile, land fires in the Bereketli and Taşköy neighborhoods of Altıeylül district also spread rapidly due to the wind. Firefighting efforts are ongoing here, with a significant deployment of vehicles and personnel. Four buses were sent by the Metropolitan Municipality for potential evacuations.

In the Karesi district, fires in the Ortaca and Kavaklı neighborhoods advanced towards a munitions factory. A similar multi-agency response is underway, and this fire has also been brought under control. Cooling operations are continuing at all affected sites to prevent reignition.
