First Parent Fined Under Poland's New E-Scooter Helmet Law

New regulations in Poland mandating helmet use for individuals under 16 on electric scooters took effect on June 3rd, and enforcement has already begun. In Legnica, police issued a fine to a mother after her 14-year-old son was found riding as a passenger on an electric scooter without a helmet.

The incident occurred on Piłsudskiego Street, where the two 14-year-old boys were riding together on one electric scooter, traveling on the sidewalk instead of the adjacent bicycle path. They then proceeded onto a pedestrian crossing, colliding with an oncoming car. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

The passenger, the son of the fined mother, was not wearing the required protective helmet. The rider of the scooter also violated rules prohibiting carrying passengers on e-scooters and caused the collision. Police issued the mother a 50 zloty fine, the maximum being 100 zloty.

Materials concerning the passenger violation and the traffic collision have been forwarded to the Department for Minors and Pathology concerning the scooter's rider. Legnica police are reminding the public that wearing helmets and adhering to traffic laws can prevent dangerous situations and severe injuries.

The regulations also stipulate that, with few exceptions, only individuals aged 13 and older, possessing a bicycle card or appropriate driver's license, are permitted to operate electric scooters. This incident underscores the importance of the new safety measures for young riders.
