Five Drown in Ohio River During Rescue Attempt

A fishing trip on the Scioto River in Ohio tragically ended with the deaths of five individuals. The group had gathered for fishing when the incident unfolded as one person encountered difficulties while swimming.

According to Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer, the situation escalated when two individuals entered the water to help the struggling swimmer, only to get into trouble themselves. Subsequently, two more people attempted a rescue, leading to all five drowning. The exact relationships between the deceased are still under investigation, but authorities believe two couples and another individual perished.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening. A motorist reported seeing a "visibly distressed" child running near the river and called emergency services. The child informed the authorities that their family was in the river. However, by the time help arrived, it was too late. All five victims have since been recovered from the river.

Two children, aged six and seven, were with the group and are now under the care of social services. Investigators are facing challenges in their work, partly due to a language barrier. The incident remains under active investigation.
