Wildfire North of Madrid Forces Evacuations as Blazes Rage Across Europe

A devastating wildfire north of Madrid continues to rage, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,200 residents from 30 villages. The blaze, which ignited on Thursday, has consumed an estimated 26,000 hectares in the Castilla-La Mancha region. Regional government chief Emiliano García-Page described it as the worst wildfire in the region's history, noting the burned area has doubled since Sunday.

Fueled by strong winds gusting up to 50 kilometers per hour and extremely dry vegetation, the fire is spreading at an alarming rate, reportedly advancing up to four kilometers per hour in some sections. Firefighters are working intensely to create firebreaks and contain the flames, supported by heavy machinery and approximately 45 aerial units, including water-dropping planes and helicopters. Authorities have managed to prevent the fire from reaching populated areas thus far.

The wind direction from the southwest, however, did not drive the huge smoke clouds towards the capital.

The situation is compounded by the forecast of another heatwave starting Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach around 40 degrees Celsius. Spain experienced heavy rainfall in the preceding winter and spring, which promoted significant growth of grasses and underbrush. This abundant biomass has now dried out, creating highly flammable conditions that contribute to the rapid spread of the fires.

Meanwhile, France is also grappling with multiple wildfires, particularly in the south and on the island of Corsica. In the Saint-Tropez area, 360 firefighters are battling a blaze that destroyed four homes and 15 cars. Greece is bracing for its first major heatwave of the year, adding to the widespread climate-related emergencies across Southern Europe.
