Five reported over Quran memorization challenge with liquor at Jakarta festival

An Indonesian legal team has filed a police report against five parties involved in a controversial promotion at The Sounds Project music festival in Jakarta. The promotion allegedly involved Quran memorization challenges with liquor as a prize, sparking accusations of religious blasphemy.

The report, filed by lawyer Muhammad Rizki, targets the event organizer, the liquor producer, two Masters of Ceremony (MCs), and the woman who recited the Quran. Rizki expressed outrage, calling the event "trash" and questioning the motive behind using religious verses for a liquor promotion.

The incident, which went viral on social media, showed a booth offering a bottle of liquor to attendees who could recite a chapter from the Quran. The festival's official Instagram account, The Sounds Project, issued a statement condemning the behavior. They emphasized that such actions, which use religion for challenges or product promotions, are unacceptable and were beyond their control.

We as the event organizers are also angry, disappointed, and condemn such behavior. We have never, and will never, condone behavior that uses religion as material for challenges or product promotions in any form.

One of the MCs, Revnaldo Ega S, also issued a public apology via his Threads account. He admitted to a lapse in judgment in managing the situation, describing the incident as a spontaneous audience action not directly linked to the liquor brand, Newport. Newport's management also apologized for the controversy, acknowledging the lapse in controlling the situation.
