The slogan “Out Lula, out Moraes” turned São Paulo’s Sept. 7 rally into a campaign platform for Flávio Bolsonaro, who arrived on Paulista Avenue at about 3 p.m. with supporters and political allies. The senator and presidential candidate appeared alongside deputies Marco Feliciano and Sóstenes Cavalcante, former deputy Deltan Dallagnol, Senator Sergio Moro, and pastor Silas Malafaia.

Messages reportedly revealed between Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Daniel Vorcaro of Banco Master helped fuel the mobilization by Bolsonaro supporters. Demonstrators carried flags from the United States and Israel, as well as photographs of people convicted over the Jan. 8 unrest, whom they described as political prisoners. The parties Republicanos, PL, and PP distributed campaign leaflets and displayed flags, turning the gathering into a stage for several congressional candidates.

São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes, who has acted as Flávio’s political ally in the city, told the crowd that “the Supreme Court is the Brazilian people” and urged votes for right-wing Senate candidates. Daniella Marques, a former president of Caixa Econômica Federal under Jair Bolsonaro, attacked President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s economic promises, saying Lula promised steak and delivered pizza paid in installments. “We will put an end to this wasteful spending,” she said.

PL President Valdemar Costa Neto told the crowd that “Bolsonaro will remain in prison for another 10 years if Flávio is not elected,” prompting chants of “Come back, Bolsonaro.” Before the rally, Bolsonaro supporters had also mobilized behind Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça, who is handling the Banco Master case. Flávio’s ties to Vorcaro also featured in the political backdrop. Reports said the former banker paid nearly 64 million reais toward production of the film “Dark Horse.” Flávio denied wrongdoing and described the matter as a private transaction, but had not presented documents proving it when the article was published.
