Flávio Bolsonaro denounces obstacles to his candidacy after appearing affiliated with another party

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, is encountering obstacles in registering his presidential candidacy for the upcoming October elections. He appeared affiliated with the "Missão" party in the Superior Electoral Court's (TSE) database, preventing him from formally registering with the Liberal Party (PL).

Bolsonaro has denounced this situation as a "fraud" and cast doubt on the electoral authorities' actions, stating on social media, "The system is going to do everything to stop me, but it won't succeed." His campaign has already filed an appeal with the TSE to rectify the situation. The deadline for candidates to formally present their candidacies is Saturday.

The TSE clarified that Flávio Bolsonaro's affiliation with "Missão" was not the result of a hack but stemmed from the "misuse of the tool by someone who had the party's credentials to formalize affiliations." TSE President Judge Kassio Nunes Marques has ordered an investigation into the matter.

The "Missão" party, whose presidential candidate is Renan Santos, issued a statement asserting that it was also a "victim of an attempted fraudulent affiliation of Flávio Bolsonaro." The party claims that upon detecting the fraud, it attempted to cancel the affiliation on the same day, but the TSE rejected the action. They also stated they informed Flávio Bolsonaro's office of the incident on August 2nd.

Jair Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022 and is currently under house arrest, is ineligible to run for office. He was convicted for "leading" a coup plot after losing the last election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula da Silva is currently leading in polls against Flávio Bolsonaro, who is positioned as the main opposition candidate and his father's political heir.
