Flavio Bolsonaro Gets Party Nod to Run Against Brazil's Lula

Flavio Bolsonaro, son of Brazil's former president, has been confirmed as the Liberal Party's candidate to face incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the upcoming election. The announcement came at the party's convention in Sao Paulo, where Flavio declared, "Bolsonaro's blood flows here."

His father, Jair Bolsonaro, is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup following his defeat by Lula in the 2022 presidential race. Brazil's presidential election is scheduled for October 4, with a potential runoff on October 25 if no candidate secures an outright majority.

Despite securing his party's nomination, Flavio Bolsonaro is still seeking a running mate and broader centrist support. The absence of prominent political figures at the convention underscored his challenges in forging an anti-Lula coalition. However, he has garnered endorsements from Argentine President Javier Milei, who expressed confidence in Bolsonaro's ability to "end the Lula risk hanging over Brazil." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also sent a video message of support.

Bolsonaro's campaign also faces headwinds. Recent polls suggest Lula would defeat him in a runoff, with a Friday poll showing Lula leading 48% to 43%. A June survey had Lula ahead 47% to 43%. Meanwhile, the Trump administration, with whom Bolsonaro has cultivated ties, has imposed new tariffs on Brazilian exports. Lula's Workers' Party is expected to formally nominate him in August.
