Flávio Bolsonaro launches presidential bid with Milei's support amid right-wing divisions

Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is set to launch his presidential campaign this Saturday. The event, to be held at the iconic Pacaembu stadium in São Paulo, will feature the presence of Argentine President Javier Milei, who is traveling from Buenos Aires to support his ally.

The primary objective of this launch is to unify a fragmented right-wing political movement ahead of the October presidential elections. Flávio Bolsonaro, representing the Liberal Party (PL), aims to rally support under his candidacy, positioning himself as an alternative to the current government. He has criticized the current administration, stating, "We are going to recover the hope of the Brazilian people, who can no longer stand so much violence and so many unconstitutional actions. Food is very expensive, nothing works in this country, because this Government is corrupt and incompetent."

Despite the high-profile support, Flávio Bolsonaro faces significant hurdles. He is currently second in opinion polls behind President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A major challenge is the selection of a vice-presidential candidate. While he desires a woman for the role and considered senator Tereza Cristina Corrêa, she declined the offer. Negotiations with other right-wing parties, such as the Republicans and the União Progressista coalition, have also stalled.

Furthermore, Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign is shadowed by internal family conflicts and scandals. He has publicly clashed with his stepmother, Michelle Bolsonaro, the wife of Jair Bolsonaro and a key figure among female and evangelical voters. Michelle accused her stepson of "humiliating her" and temporarily stepped down from her leadership role in the PL's women's division. Flávio later apologized on social media, seeking to mend relations.

Jair Bolsonaro himself is currently ineligible to run due to a conviction related to an attempted coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula da Silva. The upcoming launch event is therefore crucial for Flávio to consolidate his position and demonstrate a united front for the right-wing opposition.
