Flávio Bolsonaro Vows to Appoint Women to Supreme Court, Criticizes Ministers

Presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has pledged to appoint both men and women to the Supreme Court if he wins the election, while also leveling sharp criticism at the current court's ministers. Speaking at a campaign event in the interior of São Paulo, Bolsonaro stated his intention to nominate individuals who "respect the Constitution" and do not engage in "persecution" or use their positions for personal gain. He specifically referenced the treatment of his father, Jair Bolsonaro, by the court.

The next president appoints four ministers to the STF and I will put men and women there, who respect the Constitution, who do not use the government to enrich themselves, who do not promote persecution, who do not do to any Brazilian what they did to Jair Bolsonaro. The law must apply to everyone, including an STF minister.

Bolsonaro's remarks come amid ongoing debates about gender representation on the court. While President Lula has appointed three men during his term, activists have called for greater gender equality. Currently, only one woman, Cármen Lúcia, serves on the nine-justice court. Historically, only two other women have been appointed: Ellen Gracie and Rosa Weber.

The candidate also took aim at the current PT government, warning that four more years under PT rule would lead to a loss of freedoms and an increase in crime, comparing the potential outcome to Venezuela or Greece. He asserted that Brazilians have been disarmed and stripped of their right to self-defense, a right he believes is fundamental and biblically supported. Bolsonaro also declared his intention to wage war on drug trafficking, classifying criminal organizations as terrorists.

During the event, organized by federal deputy Simone Marquetto, Bolsonaro revisited the 2018 assassination attempt on his father, Jair Bolsonaro, attributing it to a former PSOL member and repeating conspiratorial tones about the episode. Official investigations concluded the attacker acted alone. Bolsonaro concluded his remarks by stating that if elected, he would offer a prayer at his inauguration "handing the Brazilian nation into the hands of the Lord Jesus."
