Flooding, Landslides, and Fallen Trees Reported in Greater Caracas Due to Sunday Rains

Greater Caracas experienced significant disruptions Sunday as heavy rains caused the San Pedro River to swell and triggered landslides and fallen trees. The Pan-American Highway faced severe blockages, with the Carrizal distributor becoming inundated and two landslides completely obstructing the road near the La Cascada shopping center.

Further down the highway, kilometer 21 also saw a significant earth descent, impeding traffic. Fallen trees were reported in La Macarena Norte and at kilometer 14 of the Pan-American Highway heading towards Los Teques. Caracas itself endured thunder and strong winds throughout the afternoon and evening.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) issued a warning that rains with electrical discharges are expected to continue across much of Venezuela on August 23. This is attributed to the passage of tropical wave number 40. Inameh forecasts increased cloud cover overnight, bringing variable intensity rains and thunderstorms to most of the national territory, with a higher likelihood in Bolívar, Amazonas, Anzoátegui, Monagas, the central and western plains, Lara, the Central Region, the Andes, and Zulia. Emergency organizations are on alert for further incidents.
