Focus on economy over political battles, ADC chieftain urges Tinubu

Dr. Chike Okogwu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called on President Bola Tinubu to shift his focus from political rivalries to addressing Nigeria's pressing economic and social crises. Okogwu, who also leads the ADC's National Directorate of Persons with Disabilities, stated that the federal government must prioritize policies that directly improve citizens' living conditions.

Okogwu emphasized that escalating inflation, widespread unemployment, pervasive insecurity, and the rising cost of living are the most immediate concerns confronting Nigerians. He urged the President to dedicate more attention to tackling these issues rather than engaging in political contests. "Mr. President should concern himself less with wrestling political opponents and more with wrestling inflation, hunger, insecurity and unemployment," he stated.

The ADC leader also drew attention to the persistent barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing healthcare, education, transportation, and employment, despite existing legal protections. He advocated for the full implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act by both federal and state governments. Okogwu stressed that disability inclusion should be viewed as a constitutional right and a development priority, asserting that "No Nigerian should be left behind."

Okogwu noted that the ADC remains committed to policies supporting accessible infrastructure, quality education, improved healthcare, and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, alongside their increased participation in governance. He concluded that true leadership is measured by its positive impact on citizens' lives, with history celebrating leaders who reduce poverty, strengthen institutions, protect the vulnerable, and unite their people. His remarks come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties criticizing the administration's handling of the economy.
