Football Federations Consider FIFA-Free Tournaments Amid Trust Dispute

Football federations from Europe, North America, and Asia are reportedly exploring the creation of international tournaments that would operate independently of FIFA. These discussions, held in Salzburg ahead of the UEFA Super Cup match, involved leaders from UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC.

The primary catalyst for this potential schism appears to be FIFA President Gianni Infantino's rejection of an independent external audit for the FIFA Forward Enterprise project. This initiative reportedly involves the privatization and sale of stakes in World Cup commercial rights to investors. In an open letter, the heads of the federations, Aleksander Čeferin, Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, and Victor Montagliani, stated that FIFA's actions have eroded fundamental trust between the institutions.

According to reports, the governing bodies refused to conduct an internal review by FIFA staff and demanded the involvement of independent auditors. The formation of this coalition, uniting European, American, and Asian federations, poses a significant threat to FIFA's authority over world championships. Analysts suggest that the launch of parallel tournaments could lead to a major overhaul of the international football calendar.

Such a development could also trigger a redistribution of lucrative broadcast rights and sponsorship contracts, estimated to be worth $10 billion.
