Football Scandal Over Alleged Referee Sex-for-Favors Spreads to Japan

Allegations of sexual favors extended to foreign referees during matches in South Korea have cast a shadow over the nation's football administration, with the scandal now reaching Japan.

The Japan Football Association is reportedly investigating four of its referees who officiated games in South Korea between 2011 and 2012. According to Kyodo News, the investigation stems from suspicions that these referees received sexual favors. The Japanese association plans to release the final findings once confirmed.

The scandal gained prominence following a report by South Korean lawmaker Jin Seon-mee, who disclosed a "Korea Football Association Investigation Report" from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The report detailed an incident in February 2012 during a World Cup Asian third-round qualifier between South Korea and Kuwait. It is alleged that two of the four referees officiating the match visited an adult entertainment establishment in Seoul's Gangnam district, and the KFA allegedly used a corporate card to pay 500,000 won for the services.

Kyodo News indicated that the two Japanese referees under investigation are likely the same individuals implicated in this incident. South Korea won the match against Kuwait 2-0. The revelations have sparked concern and calls for transparency within the KFA, particularly regarding the integrity of refereeing appointments and conduct during international competitions.
