Forensic expert and toxicologist arrested in Chania on bribery charges

In Chania, Greece, a forensic expert and a toxicologist from the island's Forensic Service face serious charges of felony bribery. The two were arrested and have been granted until Monday, July 27, at 10:00 AM to submit their official statements to the prosecutor.

The arrests stem from allegations that the two officials accepted bribes in exchange for issuing fraudulent medical certificates. They were brought before the Chania prosecutor's office on Thursday afternoon, where charges were formally filed against them. Earlier, they had been taken to the police headquarters for questioning regarding suspected fake results in medical reports. What began as police inquiries quickly escalated to arrests.

Their lawyer, Emmanuil Savvopoulos, stated that the accused do not understand the reasons for their charges. "Both accused, from a brief conversation we had, have not understood why they are being accused," he told reporters. The police investigation in Chania is reportedly extensive, with around 25 individuals potentially implicated in the issuance of fake documents. This case appears to have originated from a larger extortion ring investigation that gained public attention about a year ago.
