Forest Fire in Konitsa Canyon; Helicopter Grounded Due to Malfunction

A forest fire erupted Thursday afternoon in the steep Tymfi gorge near Konitsa, Epirus, reportedly sparked by lightning.

The blaze is unfolding at an altitude of 1,200 meters in a challenging, precipitous location. A ground team comprising seven firefighters is actively engaged in combating the fire.

Adding to the operational difficulties, a leased helicopter belonging to the Fire Service was compelled to land. The aircraft positioned itself near the Aoos River to allow the crew to inspect and repair the water bucket, which had become detached. The helicopter is expected to resume its firefighting duties once the bucket is secured.

This incident highlights the challenges faced in battling wildfires, particularly in difficult terrain, and the reliance on both ground and air support. The temporary grounding of the helicopter adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing suppression efforts.
