Forest fire in Sukabumi's Gunung Geulis area extinguished

A fire swept through a forest and land area in the Gunung Geulis region of Sukabumi, West Java, on Tuesday evening, prompting a swift response from joint emergency services and local residents. The blaze, which began around 7 p.m. local time, consumed an estimated 4 hectares of land before being brought under control.

According to the Head of the Lengkong Police Sector, AKP Awan Ridwan, the fire is suspected to have originated from the roadside near Pasir Bitung village. Strong winds and the abundance of dry bamboo leaves and twigs in the hilly terrain caused the flames to spread rapidly. A combined team of police, military personnel, the fire department, and community members worked diligently to combat the fire.

He added that monitoring would continue to prevent any resurgence of the flames. The police are still investigating the exact cause of the fire.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and avoid careless land burning, especially during dry conditions. They also advise against discarding cigarette butts in flammable areas. This incident marks the 15th forest and land fire in Sukabumi Regency during August, with a total affected area reaching 49.2 hectares, according to the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
