Forest Fire Near Turkish Naval Base Controlled After Spreading Rapidly

A forest fire erupted near the Foça Naval Base in Izmir, Turkey, on Friday afternoon, quickly spreading across a large area due to intense winds. The blaze, which began around 3:45 p.m. local time, prompted immediate alerts from nearby residents who reported the smoke to the emergency services.

Response teams from the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department and the Izmir Forest Regional Directorate were swiftly dispatched. The firefighting efforts involved multiple fire engines, water tankers, bulldozers, and aerial support from five planes and two helicopters. Local municipality water tankers also joined the operation to assist in extinguishing the flames.

The strong winds significantly fueled the fire, creating challenging conditions for the crews. While the wind direction partially aided the firefighters by blowing towards the sea, the flames approached several critical locations, raising serious concerns. Firefighters established a strong defensive line to prevent the fire from reaching an animal shelter, a prison, and its associated housing.

Alarm was raised for the military ammunition depots in the area, considered the most critical point of the fire. Intense efforts by the teams eventually brought the fire under control, averting potential disaster in these sensitive zones.
