Forest Fires in Croatia Force People to Flee

Hundreds of people were forced to evacuate a popular tourist town in Croatia as raging forest fires threatened homes and livelihoods. The fires broke out in Lokva Rogoznica, a coastal settlement near the Adriatic Sea, quickly spreading and consuming houses and vehicles.

Over 150 firefighters were engaged in a desperate battle against the flames. However, strong winds exacerbated the situation, fanning the fire and pushing it into populated areas. The intensity of the blaze led to some individuals sustaining burns, prompting an urgent evacuation of approximately 1,000 residents.

Authorities closed the coastal road through Lokva Rogoznica due to the fire. Fire officials described the situation as difficult, anticipating a challenging night ahead as they worked to contain the spread. Reinforcements were called in from other parts of the country, and four firefighting aircraft were deployed at dawn to assist in the efforts.

The rapid spread and destructive nature of the fires highlight the vulnerability of coastal communities to environmental hazards, especially during dry and windy conditions. The response involved a significant mobilization of resources to protect lives and property.
