Forlán doubts his Uruguay coaching stint will extend beyond March

Former Uruguayan footballer Diego Forlán described his appointment as interim coach of the national team as a "huge privilege" but expressed doubt that his tenure would extend beyond March. This timeframe aligns with the elections scheduled to determine the future direction of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF).

Forlán, who played 112 matches for the national team, is currently coaching the under-20 squad and has been tasked with leading the senior team for upcoming friendly matches, starting with a game against Japan on September 24. He stated that thinking beyond March is difficult given the impending elections.

Looking ahead, Forlán plans to give opportunities to emerging young talents within the squad. However, he also indicated that the door remains open for the return of the team's all-time leading scorer, Luis Suárez, who is 39 years old. Forlán believes this approach will foster healthy competition, pushing capable young players to exert greater effort and ultimately improve the overall level of the national team.
