Former authorities back plan for agency to liquidate seized assets

Former Interior Ministry officials have expressed support for a government initiative to establish a dedicated agency tasked with liquidating assets confiscated from criminals. This proposed body aims to bolster police capabilities and create a fund to compensate victims.

Justice Minister Fernando Rabat explained the initiative's objectives, stating that the government is exploring the creation of an institution to expedite the liquidation of assets derived from criminal activities. The plan also includes the destruction of illicit goods such as drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol, alongside the establishment of a victim reparation fund.

The proposed agency would reportedly include representatives from the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Public Security. Furthermore, its directors would be selected through a public high-level management selection process, ensuring transparency and expertise in its leadership.
