Former Bayern Star Mark van Bommel Faces Challenge with Belgium

Former Dutch international midfielder Mark van Bommel is poised to take the helm of the Belgian national football team, according to Belgian media reports. The 49-year-old is said to have reached an agreement with the Belgian Football Association and is expected to sign a contract that will see him lead the 'Red Devils' at least until the 2028 European Championship.

Van Bommel brings a wealth of experience from his coaching career following his playing days, during which he captained Bayern Munich. He has previously managed PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg, and most recently, Antwerp. His tenure at Antwerp concluded two years ago, after he guided the club to their first Belgian league title in 66 years.

Belgium's previous coach, Rudi Garcia, departed following disagreements with several national team players and technical director Vincent Mannaert. The team's performance in the World Cup quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Spain, also contributed to the change.

Van Bommel's appointment is anticipated to bring a new dynamic to the Belgian squad as they prepare for future international competitions.
