Slovenia wins historic first team kayaking gold at World Championships

Slovenia has achieved a historic milestone in whitewater kayaking, securing its first-ever team gold medal at a World Championship slalom event. The triumphant trio of Peter Kauzer, Žiga Lin Hočevar, and Lan Tominc delivered a stellar performance in Oklahoma City, etching their names in Slovenian sports history.

The victory was hard-fought, with the Slovenian team finishing just 0.11 seconds ahead of Switzerland and 1.18 seconds ahead of Austria, who took silver and bronze, respectively. The initial favorites and defending champions, France, were the fastest on the water but incurred a 50-second penalty from the judges. After a lengthy review, the penalty was upheld, paving the way for Slovenia's celebratory win.

Veteran kayaker Peter Kauzer, aged 42, highlighted the personal significance of this team gold. "This victory means a lot to me. I am 42 years old, and I have been chasing a team victory for a very long time. I have been European champion with the team and won medals at world championships, but a gold medal was missing," Kauzer told organizers. He remained non-committal about participating in the next Olympic Games, stating he would decide his future career path after the season.

Kauzer's medal collection is now remarkably complete. He won his first team medal in 2005 and has since added several more. Hočevar, a younger member of the team who stepped in for this event, praised Kauzer's achievements. This gold medal marks Slovenia's eighth overall medal at world championships and their sixth under the Slovenian flag, with one previous team gold won under the Yugoslavian flag in 1989.
