Former Cameroonian official dies six months after 20-year prison release

Gérard Emmanuel Ondo Ndongo, the former director general of Cameroon's Special Fund for Equipment and Inter-municipal Intervention (FEICOM), has died six months after regaining his freedom. His death marks the end of a long and tumultuous journey that saw him spend two decades behind bars.

Ondo Ndongo was arrested in February 2006 as part of "Operation Sparrowhawk," a government anti-corruption initiative. He faced charges of embezzling 36 billion CFA francs. His legal saga was protracted, with his sentence fluctuating through various court proceedings. Initially sentenced to 50 years, this was reduced to 20 years on appeal, only to be increased to 30 years by the Supreme Court.

He was eventually released on February 21, 2026, having served his 20-year sentence. During his brief period of liberty, Ondo Ndongo expressed gratitude for enduring the ordeal and for his release. His passing comes at a time when he was beginning to experience life outside prison walls again, a freedom he had been denied for twenty years.
