Former Energy Secretary summoned by Presidential Commission on Coal Transactions

Dr. Surendra Batagoda, the former Secretary of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, is scheduled to appear before the Presidential Special Investigation Commission on Monday, August 31. The commission is currently investigating coal transactions, and Dr. Batagoda is expected to provide his statement regarding dealings that occurred during his time as secretary.

Dr. Batagoda was appointed Secretary of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy in January 2015. He continued in this role, even after the ministry's name changed to the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, until November 2019. His testimony is anticipated to shed light on the procedures and decisions made concerning coal procurement during that period.

This investigation into coal transactions is part of a broader effort to ensure transparency and accountability in the energy sector. The commission has already recorded statements from several former ministers and deputy ministers. These include former ministers Kumar Jayakody, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Kanchana Wijesekera, and Pavithra Wanniarachchi, as well as former Deputy Minister D V Chanaka.
