Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to launch memoir in Bucharest

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to launch her highly anticipated memoir, "Freedom. Memories 1954-2021," in Bucharest on September 1.

The launch event, scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Romanian Athenaeum, will take the form of a public dialogue. Merkel will be joined by journalist and diplomat Emil Hurezeanu, who previously served as Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs. This engagement marks Bucharest as one of the select international destinations Merkel has chosen for personal appearances to promote her book, alongside major capitals like Berlin, Washington, Budapest, and Athens.

Tickets for the event are available through Eventbook. Each ticket includes a copy of Merkel's memoir. For dedicated fans, a limited number of tickets will offer a copy of the book signed by Angela Merkel herself.

According to publisher Litera, the memoir offers a unique perspective on the "meanders of power" and serves as a "firm plea for freedom." Written in collaboration with her long-time political advisor Beate Baumann, the book chronicles Merkel's life, which was equally divided between East and West Germany: 35 years in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and 35 years in unified Germany. The book delves into her childhood, youth, and studies in the GDR, the dramatic events of 1989 including the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the beginnings of her political career.

Merkel also shares insights into her meetings and discussions with influential world leaders. The publisher states that she reveals, with clarity and precision, how decisions shaping the present were made, drawing from pivotal moments in national, European, and international history. The memoir was initially released internationally in 2024 and has since been published in over 30 countries.
