Romania Allows Alcohol Sales at Sports Stadiums with New Law

President Nicușor Dan has signed into law a bill that allows the sale and consumption of certain alcoholic beverages within sports stadiums and arenas. The legislation, adopted by the Chamber of Deputies approximately three weeks ago, modifies existing rules on preventing violence during sports events.

The new regulation introduces an exception to Law no. 4/2008, permitting the sale and consumption of beverages with an alcohol content of up to 5.5% by volume. Organizers are obligated to serve these drinks, along with non-alcoholic options, in paper or plastic cups without lids. This change aligns Romania with practices in several other European countries and is expected to boost revenue from sports event organization.

Notably, VIP areas, boxes, and similar spaces will be permitted to sell and serve alcoholic beverages without any limit on alcohol concentration. However, the law maintains restrictions on entry for individuals who are visibly intoxicated or under the influence of hallucinogenic substances. Spectators carrying alcohol or prohibited items like pyrotechnics, explosives, weapons, or toxic substances will also be denied entry.

Previously, consuming alcohol at sports venues during events was prohibited. Proponents of the initiative argued that the measure would enhance Romania's sporting event landscape and potentially increase income. The law also includes provisions to improve accessibility for people with disabilities and permits organized pyrotechnic displays by specialized firms.

The law will officially take effect upon its publication in the Official Gazette. This move represents a significant shift in regulations concerning alcohol at sporting events in Romania.
