Former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya travels to Mexico for heart-related medical review

Former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya traveled to Mexico for a medical checkup after undergoing surgery to remove excess fluid around his heart.

Zelaya, who governed Honduras from 2006 to 2009 before being ousted in a coup, left Tegucigalpa aboard an ambulance plane. Local media reported that several family members accompanied him. He arrived at Toncontín Airport after driving himself there and did not identify the medical center where he would receive care.

Speaking briefly to reporters, Zelaya said he felt well, both physically and emotionally. He said he was traveling to Mexico to find out “what happened and what caused” the health problem.
