Former Hospital Director Detained for Collusion, Embezzlement, and Money Laundering Charges in Taiwan

Former Changhua Christian Hospital director Kuo Shou-jen and former vice director Lai Chien-wen have been detained on suspicion of serious offenses including breach of trust, embezzlement, and money laundering. The accusations stem from alleged collusion with a medical device supplier, resulting in contracts that harmed the hospital's interests.

The investigation, involving multiple judicial and investigative units, led to searches of 30 locations, including the hospital and related companies. Prosecutors have gathered a large volume of contracts, account books, and electronic records. Kuo Shou-jen served as hospital director from 2008 to 2017 and later as collaborative president, while Lai Chien-wen was vice director during the same period.

Prosecutors believe the evidence against the three individuals, including the supplier, is substantial. Concerns about tampering with evidence and colluding with witnesses led to the court approving their detention and prohibiting further contact. The case has sent shockwaves through the medical community.
