Former Kyrgyz Prosecutor General Kambaraaly Kongantiev Dies at 79

Kyrgyzstan's legal and state system mourns the loss of Kambaraaly Kongantiev, a prominent statesman and Honored Jurist, who passed away on July 31, 2026, at the age of 79. Kongantiev dedicated a significant portion of his professional life to upholding the law and serving the state.

Born in 1947, Kongantiev graduated from the law faculty of the Kyrgyz State University in 1974. His career began in the prosecutor's office, where he progressed from senior investigator to prosecutor of Przhevalsk and later served as Deputy Prosecutor of the Kirghiz SSR. He also held key positions within the Bishkek prosecutor's office.

Kongantiev played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Financial Police of the Kyrgyz Republic, heading its investigative division and contributing to the development of systems for investigating economic and financial crimes. His extensive involvement with the Jogorku Kenesh, Kyrgyzstan's parliament, included serving as head of the legal department, ensuring legal support for legislative work.

Elected to the Jogorku Kenesh in March 2005, Kongantiev chaired committees on constitutional law, state structure, legality, judicial reform, and human rights. He served as Prosecutor General from November 2005 to March 2007. Later, he represented the president and government in parliament, acted as an advisor to the head of state, and was a member of the political council of the Ata-Jurt party.

Recognized for his decades of state service, Kongantiev received the title "Honored Jurist of the Kyrgyz Republic" and was awarded the medal "For Labor Valor" and the Certificate of Honor of the Kyrgyz Republic. He is remembered by colleagues as an experienced lawyer, a principled leader, and a dedicated public servant whose contributions to the prosecutor's office, legality, and the legal system will remain part of the country's history.
