Former lawmaker Franc Trček exits Slovenia's Social Democrats

Franc Trček, a former member of the Slovenian parliament, has announced his departure from the Social Democrats (SD) party. Trček, who previously served two terms in parliament with the Left party before joining the SD in 2020 and becoming a member of its presidency, stated that significant disagreements over political responsibility and the party's future direction made his continued membership untenable.

The differences in understanding political responsibility and future direction are too great, and the time has come to conclude some chapters so that they remain true to their original purpose.

In his resignation statement, Trček expressed that the political landscape has become too narrow for substantive debate and long-term strategic thinking. He indicated that it was time to conclude certain chapters to remain true to their original purpose. Trček plans to continue his employment at the Ministry of Public Administration, Cohesion, and Regional Development, where he began working during the tenure of former minister Aleksander Jevšek (SD). He also mentioned he would remain a "critical observer of politics and social events."

There is increasingly less room in the political space for in-depth substantive discussion and long-term development considerations, so I am withdrawing from party political activity.

The SD party confirmed Trček's departure, stating they respect his decision and thank him for his contributions. The party wished him well in his future endeavors. Trček's exit follows that of other notable figures from the SD, including former minister Anja Kopač, ex-Member of the European Parliament Mojca Kleva, and former lawmaker and presidency member Jan Škoberne.
