Former Mexican judge at International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea dies

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) announced with "great sorrow" the passing of Mexican judge Alonso Gómez-Robledo Verduzco. Judge Gómez-Robledo Verduzco, who served on the maritime law court based in Hamburg, Germany, from 2014 to 2023, died on July 16, 2026. The tribunal honored his significant contributions to the field of international maritime law. Before his tenure at the ITLOS, Gómez-Robledo Verduzco was a professor of Public International Law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico's Faculty of Law. He was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. His extensive legal career included serving as a legal advisor to Mexico's Secretariat of Foreign Affairs. He authored numerous books and articles on Public International Law, with a particular focus on the Law of the Sea and human rights. The ITLOS, an institution established by the UN in 1996, resolves disputes concerning the interpretation and application of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which entered into force in 1994.
