Former National Volleyball Captain Mircea Abraham Dies at 53

The Romanian sports community is mourning the loss of Mircea Abraham, a former captain of the national volleyball team, who passed away at the age of 53. His death follows closely on the heels of his brother, Sorin Abraham, who also died a year prior at the age of 50, leaving a profound sense of grief within the family and the sport.

Mirella Abraham, the siblings' sister, shared a heartfelt message on social media, announcing Mircea's passing and expressing her sorrow. "My champions… now you are together again," she wrote, reflecting on their shared passion for volleyball. She requested privacy for the family during this difficult time and asked for prayers and candles to be lit worldwide for her brother's soul.

The Romanian Volleyball Federation also announced Abraham's sudden death, lamenting the void his departure leaves in Romanian volleyball. They extended their sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and appreciated him. Abraham was recognized as a "Master of Sports" in 2020 for his contributions to the sport.

Abraham's volleyball career began at CSS Zalău under Professor Marin Silaghi. He achieved significant success, winning the Romanian championship and Cup with teams like Elcond Zalău and Deltacons Tulcea, and also played for Dinamo Bucharest. He was a key player for the national team for nine years, serving as captain. After retiring as a player, he transitioned to coaching, leading CS Phoenix Șimleu Silvaniei to promotion to the first division and also contributing to the national senior team's staff. In recent years, he had been living in Ireland.
