Archaeologist Gică Băeștean Dies Suddenly After Decades Defending Roman Site

Gică Băeștean, an archaeologist who dedicated three decades to the Roman site of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, has died suddenly at the age of 54. Băeștean was known for his deep personal connection to the ancient Dacian capital and for being a staunch defender of its heritage. He frequently engaged with tourists, sharing his knowledge and advocating for the poorly understood site.

Băeștean was also recognized for his unconventional interpretations of Roman Dacia's early history. He proposed that the conflict between Dacians and Romans did not end in 106 AD but continued for several years, citing the late founding of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa and the significant military presence in the province's early years. These hypotheses, based on his archaeological research, sometimes led to disputes with other specialists.

Colleagues remember Băeștean as someone who lived for Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa. His direct approach and full immersion in the site's issues, alongside his scientific conclusions, sometimes created friction. He had previously spoken about the difficulties in publishing his research and feeling marginalized within the archaeological community.
