Former Olympian faces life sentence for leading international drug ring from hospital bed

A former Taiwanese Olympian, once a celebrated bobsledder, now faces life in prison for leading an international heroin smuggling ring. The 70-year-old suspect, identified by the surname Wu, is accused of orchestrating multiple large-scale heroin shipments into Taiwan over the past four decades.

Despite being severely ill and confined to a hospital bed, reliant on a ventilator, Wu allegedly continued to manage his drug operations. He reportedly used a mobile phone to direct his associates, arranging overseas shipments and domestic sales. Investigators even discovered he used a heater in his hospital room to test the purity of heroin, a detail that emerged after staff noticed an unusual odor.

Wu's alleged accomplices, identified as Yang and Li, acted as his assistants, handling the logistics of drug transportation and sales within Taiwan. A Chinese national, identified as Du, who was Yang's girlfriend and worked as a caregiver, also allegedly assisted Wu with daily needs and relaying instructions.

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for Wu, emphasizing the severe harm his alleged activities have caused to public health. The former athlete's physical decline from his once-vigorous appearance as a national competitor to his current frail state on a hospital bed has led investigators to lament the destructive impact of drug addiction on his life.
