Thief repeatedly steals specific brand of pineapple detergent from Taiwanese legislator's office

A legislative assistant's office in Taiwan has become the target of a peculiar series of thefts, with a single suspect repeatedly stealing only one specific item: pineapple enzyme detergent produced by the local agricultural cooperative.

The office, belonging to legislator Chiu Yi-ying in Kaohsiung's Dashu District, experienced three thefts of the detergent over two months. Initially dismissing the first incident, the repeated disappearances prompted the office to review surveillance footage. The recordings revealed a man brazenly walking into the office during daylight hours and taking the detergent, even bringing his own plastic bag to carry it.

When apprehended by police, the suspect, identified by the surname Li, explained that he needed detergent for his home and had a preference for that particular brand. Li is reportedly a low-income individual. In response, the legislative office has decided to gift him detergent, hoping this gesture will deter him from further offenses and prevent him from falling afoul of the law again.

Despite the office's conciliatory approach, theft is a public offense, and the police have forwarded Li's case to the prosecutors. The Dashu District Agricultural Association, which produces the popular pineapple enzyme detergent, noted its high repurchase rate due to its natural ingredients and effectiveness. The product, made from pineapple peels, brown sugar, and water, has become a bestseller, with over 20,000 bottles sold since its launch.
