Former PM Nguyen Tan Dung Attends Memorial for Heroes in An Giang

Former Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng joined officials and citizens in An Giang province on July 27, 2026, to attend a solemn memorial ceremony honoring war heroes and martyrs. The event marked the 79th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day, a significant occasion dedicated to remembering and expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made for national independence and reunification.

The ceremony took place at the An Giang Provincial Temple of Heroes, Martyrs, and Contributors. Dignitaries present included General Lê Hồng Anh, former Standing Member of the Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and Major General Nguyễn Minh Triều, Deputy Commander of Military Region 9. Leaders from the An Giang Provincial Party Committee and People's Committee, along with Heroes of the People's Armed Forces, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, and relatives of martyrs, also participated.

Throughout the long history of building and defending the country, countless generations of ancestors, heroes, martyrs, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, and contributors have bravely fought and sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the nation and the happiness of the people.

During the ceremony, attendees laid flowers and offered incense, paying tribute to the countless individuals who fought and died for the nation. Phó Chủ tịch UBND tỉnh An Giang Lê Văn Phước highlighted the historical significance of the sacrifices made throughout Vietnam's struggles for self-determination. He emphasized that the provincial temple serves as a vital site for political, historical, and humanitarian reflection, educating current and future generations about patriotism and revolutionary spirit.

The An Giang Provincial Temple of Heroes, Martyrs, and Contributors currently enshrines the memory of 2,560 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and 32,387 heroes, martyrs, and contributors. This year's memorial service, the first of its kind since the unification of Kiên Giang and An Giang provinces, is set to become an annual tradition. Officials stated the aim is to foster the 'drinking water, remember its source' philosophy and promote gratitude, while instilling patriotism and a sense of duty in the younger generation.
