Former senior Indonesian prosecutor arrested, millions in cash and gold seized

Indonesian authorities have detained a former senior prosecutor, Febrie Adriansyah, following the seizure of millions of US dollars and over 70 kilograms of gold bars from his residences and properties.

According to Rudi Margono, the Assistant Attorney General for Supervision, Adriansyah is accused of money laundering during his tenure as the Head of Special Crimes Prosecution at the Attorney General's Office. He resigned on July 11 after more than four years in the position, preceding raids on his properties, including his home outside Jakarta.

Investigators confiscated approximately $19 million in cash across various currencies and 74 kg of gold bars, valued at millions of dollars. After hours of questioning, Adriansyah denied any wrongdoing, asserting he was a victim of 'crime,' according to his statement to a local television station. His lawyer, Febri Diansyah, expressed hope for a fair legal process.

The investigation into Adriansyah began with the police before being transferred to the anti-corruption investigation unit within the office where he previously served. Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, has long struggled with corruption, leading to the arrest of dozens of public officials in recent years.
