Former Supreme Court of Brazil president Octavio Gallotti dies at 95

Octavio Gallotti, a former president of Brazil's Supreme Court (STF), passed away on Sunday at the age of 95. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Gallotti served as a minister on the STF from 1984 until 2000, having been appointed by President João Figueiredo during the military dictatorship. He led the court as its president from 1993 to 1995. The STF issued a statement expressing profound regret over his death, announcing that his wake would be open to the public at the court's White Hall on Monday.

The STF noted Gallotti's significant role in consolidating the court's jurisprudence following the 1988 Constitution. It stated that he performed his duties with "recognized commitment to the Constitution, the rule of law, and the strengthening of republican institutions." The tribunal further praised his technical rigor, independent judgments, and dedication to public service, calling him a lasting reference for the Brazilian judiciary.

STF President Edson Fachin lauded Gallotti's "relevant contribution" to Brazil, stating his career was intertwined with a significant period of the nation's institutional history. Fachin described him as a magistrate of "notable legal culture, exemplary public spirit, and unwavering commitment to the Constitution," whose work left permanent marks on democratic institutions. Vice President Alexandre de Moraes and Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet also offered condolences, emphasizing Gallotti's integrity, serenity, and dedication to democracy and legality.
