FORMOSA 7s tournament in Kaohsiung attracts 192 teams, ignites football economy

Kaohsiung is hosting the third annual FORMOSA 7s international youth football championship, which has seen a significant expansion in scale. The tournament has drawn 192 teams, including 30 international squads, bringing over 6,000 players to Taiwan and establishing it as the largest international youth football exchange platform in the nation's history.

Teams participating in the event hail from various regions such as Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Spain, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore. This diverse participation underscores the tournament's growing appeal and its role in fostering global football connections.

The opening ceremony featured a competitive match between the U16 youth teams of Spanish LaLiga clubs Villarreal and Getafe. Their fast-paced, physically intense game showcased top-tier European youth training and ended in a 1-1 draw. This high-caliber match not only entertained spectators but also signaled FORMOSA 7s' emergence as a significant international youth football exchange stage, attracting world-class clubs to Taiwan.

Organizers anticipate that the tournament will attract around 10,000 visitors. With participating teams staying an average of four to five days, the event is expected to significantly boost demand for accommodation, dining, transportation, shopping, and tourism. The projected economic benefit is estimated at 300 million New Taiwan dollars, highlighting the tournament's substantial contribution to the local sports economy.
