Formula One leader Antonelli to take grid drop at Monza home race

Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli is set to incur a significant grid penalty at his home Italian Grand Prix in Monza next month. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff confirmed that the young driver will face a drop of at least 10 places, potentially starting at the back of the grid, due to an engine change.

Antonelli, who boasts a commanding 59-point lead over his closest rivals George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, is fresh off a second-place finish at the Dutch Grand Prix behind Lando Norris. The upcoming Monza race marks his first home Grand Prix of the season, occurring just after his 20th birthday.

Wolff explained that the grid drop is a consequence of exceeding the season's allocation of power unit components. "With Kimi we are taking the full thing," Wolff stated, indicating a substantial and necessary change. He added that while algorithms might not consider nationality when selecting the best track for such a penalty, the team prioritizes the championship fight over public relations.

Antonelli has been a revelation this season, securing five consecutive wins and six victories overall. He is on track to potentially become Italy's first Formula One world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, a prospect that has generated considerable excitement in a nation long associated with Ferrari. Discussions are also underway regarding a similar penalty for teammate George Russell.
