Four Bodies Recovered After Avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak; Search Continues for Six Climbers

Rescue efforts are underway after an avalanche swept over Broad Peak, an 8,047-meter summit in Pakistan's Karakoram range, on Thursday. Four bodies have been recovered, and the search continues for six missing climbers from an international expedition.

The group consisted of climbers from the United States, China, Pakistan, Oman, and six from Nepal. Contact with the team was lost following the avalanche around midday Thursday. The Pakistan Alpine Club stated it is working with authorities to launch a helicopter rescue operation on Friday morning, provided weather conditions allow.

We are cooperating with the authorities and, if the weather conditions allow, a rescue operation with a helicopter will be organized on Friday morning, Pakistan time.

Broad Peak, the 12th highest mountain in the world, is considered one of the most challenging climbs. The Pakistan Alpine Club has expressed solidarity with the families of the climbers and the international mountaineering community, praying for their safety and successful rescue. They are ensuring all available resources are mobilized quickly.

The expedition leader, Nimsdai Purja, gained fame in 2019 for summiting all 14 mountains over 8,000 meters in just over six months. Purja, a former Gurkha and British special forces soldier, began his mountaineering career in 2012.
