A significant power outage struck four Central Asian nations simultaneously on Friday, plunging parts of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan into darkness. Shortly after, power failures were reported in four districts of Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city. Local authorities cited an accident on the power lines as the cause, leading to the paralysis of the Almaty metro, non-functional traffic lights, and interruptions in mobile phone service. Water supply was also reportedly affected due to potential disruptions at pumping stations.

Tajikistan's capital, Dushanbe, also experienced electricity cuts. However, the Ministry of Energy there ruled out an accident at the Nurek hydroelectric power plant, the country's largest, as the source of the problem. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan confirmed that several of its regions were impacted by the outage, with authorities stating it was due to "an accident in the power grid of the neighboring country."
