Four dead in catamaran-sailboat collision off Croatian coast

A tragic maritime accident in Croatia's Split Channel claimed four lives when a catamaran collided with a sailboat. The incident, which occurred near Brač Island, is under investigation by the County State Attorney's Office in Split.

They were experienced athletes, they loved mountains and water. I have no idea what could have happened for them to drown. They were experienced travelers.

Authorities recovered three bodies from the sea shortly after the collision. The fourth victim, a man, was found inside the sunken sailboat at a depth of 50 meters and was brought ashore on Monday afternoon. The catamaran was traveling on the Split-Hvar route, while the sailboat was en route to Hvar from Trogir.

Eight Czech citizens were on the sailboat. Czech media have begun identifying the victims, with reports indicating that a married couple, Jiřina and Petr from Bolatice, were among those who perished. They are survived by two daughters, grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and family. Friends described them as experienced travelers and nature enthusiasts who frequently sailed the Adriatic.

This is a huge loss not only for their family but for all of Bolatice. It hurts terribly and I think of all their loved ones. We can only guess what happened at sea. But even when the accident is investigated, no one will bring back the lives of the deceased. If only we could turn back time and welcome their return.

The local community in Bolatice is in mourning, with the mayor expressing deep sorrow over the loss. A black flag has been flown at the municipal building in tribute to the victims. Maritime and technical investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the collision, and the Split Port Authority is preparing to salvage the sunken sailboat.
