Four Family Members Killed in Kwara Building Collapse

Four members of one family died after a three-storey building collapsed early Tuesday in Popo Giwa, Ilorin, Kwara State, while rescuers pulled four others alive from the rubble.

The collapse occurred at about 5 a.m. at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque. Eight members of the family were initially trapped. An eyewitness, Abdulganiy Musa, said the father was a serving soldier and the mother worked as a casual staff member at the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies in Ilorin.

The rescue mission began immediately after the collapse and to the Grace of God, some were rescued but unfortunately, we have to take it as this.

Rescue teams deployed an excavator to clear debris and reach those still trapped. Several emergency and security agencies took part in the operation, and ambulances transported survivors for medical treatment. A child identified as Firdaus, the family’s second-to-last-born, was among those rescued.

One of the things that made it very easy for us to rescue the few people we were able to rescue is the access route.

Kwara State Fire Service spokesman Hassan Adekunle confirmed that four people died and four survived. He said the agency received a distress call at around 5 a.m., then immediately mobilised to the site.

Representing Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development Lawal Olohungbebe offered condolences and credited the access route to the building with helping responders reach the scene. He urged residents and developers to comply with building and town-planning regulations, including requirements for accessible roads.
