Nepal flood death toll passes 1,000 as thousands remain missing

The death toll from devastating floods on the China-Nepal border has passed 1,000, while rescue teams continue searching for thousands of missing people on both sides of the frontier.

Nepal’s disaster authority said at least 987 people had died in the country. Chinese state media reported 16 deaths in Tibet, bringing the combined toll from the disaster to 1,003.

After seven days of rescue operations, Nepal’s number of missing people fell to 3,916 as authorities recovered more bodies. China reported 546 people missing, leaving 4,462 missing across the two countries.

The missing in Nepal include 583 foreigners from more than 30 nationalities. Indians make up the largest group identified in the figures released by New Delhi, with 275 Indian citizens and 128 people of Indian origin missing. The United States said 85 of its citizens were missing, while reports also listed 62 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 42 Australians and 33 Britons.

Indian authorities in Uttar Pradesh said they had recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal. Officials believe the bodies may belong to flood victims and are working to identify them. Those bodies have not been included in the current death toll.
