Four sentenced in connection with killing of 19-year-old Burnaby man

Four people have now been sentenced over the killing of 19-year-old Ryan Nagy during a 2023 home invasion in Burnaby, British Columbia. All four pleaded guilty to manslaughter, receiving prison terms of between six and 10.5 years.

Burnaby RCMP officers responded shortly after 7 a.m. on June 29, 2023, to a home in the 7600-block of 17 Avenue. They found Nagy with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts by first responders, he died at the scene. A woman at the home suffered non-life-threatening injuries and went to hospital.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over the case, working with Burnaby RCMP, forensic investigators and the BC Coroners Service. The BC Prosecution Service approved manslaughter and forcible confinement charges against Ali Shamkhi, Rais Usman, Ousmane Keita and Rhoda Diabikulu in September 2024.

Thanks to the quick response from the Burnaby RCMP and the subsequent teamwork with IHIT investigators, all four individuals responsible for Ryan’s death have been held accountable.

Shamkhi received a 10.5-year global sentence in March, including time for manslaughter and unrelated firearms offences. He had pleaded guilty in October 2025. Usman received six years in April after also pleading guilty in October 2025. Keita received six years in June after pleading guilty in March, while Diabikulu received seven years on Sept. 1 after pleading guilty to manslaughter in March.

All four received credit for time already spent in custody. The court also imposed lifetime firearms prohibitions and DNA orders. IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong said the response by Burnaby police and the investigative team had held those responsible for Nagy’s death accountable, while expressing support for his loved ones and the surviving victim.
