France's wildfires hit record highs, 200,000 evacuated in southwest

Wildfires have reached historic levels in France, scorching 98,000 hectares this year and prompting the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people, with the southwest bearing the brunt of the crisis. The Gironde region, where a fire ignited near the tourist bay of Arcachon, is the epicenter, forcing 167,000 residents, including those from the Bordeaux metropolitan area, to flee.

Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez acknowledged the record-breaking scale of the blazes. "This represents a historic record," he stated. While the Gironde fire has shown a slight decrease in intensity due to cooler temperatures and higher humidity, officials warn that shifting winds could still worsen the situation. The flames are currently moving towards Bordeaux, where temporary shelters have been set up.

The fire's unpredictable nature, described by regional fire chief Marc Vermeulen as similar to a "firestorm," contributed to the massive evacuation. The blaze has already destroyed 140 homes, and over 1,500 firefighters, supported by 1,000 military personnel and 18 aerial units, are engaged in firefighting efforts. A specialized firefighting aircraft has also been deployed.

In response to the "brutal, serious, and unprecedented crisis," as described by Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin, the French government has convened an interministerial crisis cell. The military presence will increase to 1,500 troops, primarily tasked with assisting in evacuations and protecting threatened areas.
