Frankfurt Emergency Services Under Strain After Hot Weekend

Frankfurt's emergency services are struggling to cope with an overwhelming surge in calls after a sweltering weekend. The city's fire department reported that emergency response levels remain "extremely high" in dispatch, emergency medical services, and hospitals.

The utilization in the control center as well as in emergency medical services and hospitals remains extremely high.

Temperatures soared over the weekend, leading to a significant rise in heat-related emergencies. In addition to the usual daily calls, emergency crews also battled two wildfires. Markus Röck, director of the fire department, noted that while they had anticipated increased demand and boosted resources, the number of daily emergency service operations exceeded 500 on both Saturday and Sunday, compared to an average of around 350.

We expected the weather-related increased burden in emergency medical services over the weekend and had already increased the provision of rescue resources in advance.

Even on Monday, call volumes remained higher than planned capacity. Röck emphasized the critical situation, stating, "Emergency response is in a state of emergency." He added, "Currently, we are reaching our limits, both technically and in terms of personnel."

Both on Saturday and Sunday, more than 500 emergency service operations had to be processed each day. On average, we record around 350 emergency service operations per day.
