Free meals program at Indonesian school fosters equality and togetherness

At SDN Gentan in Seyegan, Sleman, the "Makan Bergizi Gratis" (MBG) program is fostering a sense of unity and equality among students by providing identical nutritious meals to all, irrespective of their socioeconomic status.

Rosi Doniyati, a parent, emphasized the program's importance in ensuring all children feel included. "Whether rich or poor, able or unable, everyone gets it all," she stated, highlighting that the equal distribution of meals prevents any child from feeling left out. She also noted that the provided meals contribute to meeting children's nutritional needs with balanced menus.

Another parent, Is Hartati, echoed these sentiments, stressing the program's role in promoting fairness. She added that MBG significantly assists parents who may not always have the time to prepare packed lunches. "Especially for children, if one isn't given, and one is, there will be jealousy. In my opinion, it must be equalized for everyone. It really helps mothers at home," Hartati said.

Wihandoko Suko Lelono, the MBG Coordinator at SDN Gentan, has observed positive changes since the program's implementation on August 18, 2025. Currently, 163 students benefit daily from the program. He believes MBG cultivates positive habits, such as orderly queuing before meals, and encourages sharing among students when a particular menu is less favored.
